Catastrophe at Custer Creek: Montana's Deadliest Train Wreck
Book talk by Ian Wilson
Catastrophe at Custer Creek documents the final ride of the Olympian No. 15, an elite passenger train operated by the famed Milwaukee Road. Just after midnight on June 19, 1938, it crashed into Custer Creek, killing forty-nine people and injuring seventy-five, making it the most devastating train accident in Montana's history. In this vivid narrative account, author Ian Campbell Wilson reconstructs the lives of several passengers and crew members, probes what caused this unprecedented disaster, and surveys the intertwined histories of the Milwaukee Road and the eastern Montana communities that the Olympian passed through on its usual route from Chicago to Tacoma and...

    It's true that Custer sent Reno in, and rode in himself, before establishing the strength of his enemy. But scouts working for the Army warned Custer and other officers that a large and unusual gathering of warriors awaited, but they were ignored. The narrator does not explain how Reno was splattered with blood - it was due to an Arikara scout named Bloody Knife who, while mounted near Reno, was shot in the head and Reno was splattered with blood and brain matter. Reno was so shaken by that he began shouting confusing orders and for a general retreat. But Reno and his men were lucky because many of the warriors broke off and went to join the fight against Custer's force. That gave Reno precious time to prepare a defense and so they were able to hold out. Custe was not so lucky. As to the question of why Reno and Benteen did not rush toward Custer when their two forces reunited is anyone's guess. It may well have been fear, or that neither man had no great affection for Custer that they would risk disaster.

    The comment at the end about him not possibly having PTSD and comparing him to special forces/seals/ranger is so asinine. These modern military men come back with PTSD all the time. It's a problem that is very under reported in the modern military! To say that these men were so tough that they don't get PTSD is ridiculous!

    My dad grew up on a Manitoba colony and left when he was 19 in 1970 …this video is clearly from a similar time frame. The colonies here in the region where I live have come a long way from these depictions but still many leave the colony due to religious legalism. Not saying that many in the colonies are not coming to true biblical trust in Jesus, but like many and also some Mennonite churches in southern mb, have very many traditions which make the words of God of none effect, they are just man made traditions

    What kind of a mining town, would need a library like that? A town of 10 thousand people, needed a building like that? For a library? I don't believe it. They wouldn't have enough books, to fill 2 of the rooms, in the basement. The history of Helena is phony. I'm not sure what happened there, but these buildings were re-habbed an re-purposed. They are built on the same level as the finest buildings in Amsterdam. None of the construction, and the public works systems, makes any sense, for a small mining town, in the late 1800s.

  • @jamesn.economou9922
    @jamesn.economou9922 Месяц назад

    There is a big problem with Helena. This city was built, for about 100 thousand people, but there was never much more than 10 thousand, living there. There was a tremendous amount of really large buildings, and a ridiculous number of schools. There was a 5 story orphanage, that must of been able to house hundreds of kids. Helena was a mining town remember, mostly populated by men, and business men. Ok, so they either adopted, or abandoned A LOT of children in the early days of Helena. Then you have the old brewery, the courthouse, and the mega sized mansions. My questions is this. How am I supposed to believe all of this? 10 thousand miners and their families could not have built, all of these magnificent structures. Not in 20 years! NO WAY.

    Not mentioned is the natives were shadowing a herd of buffalo. They were not prioritizing fighting the soldiers. They didn't go look for the soldiers ever. They were on hunts to feed themselves and their starving families on the reservations. After every battle they moved on chasing the herds. The scouts employed by the army knew this and made educated guesses where the "hostiles" would be based on the herd movements.

    Custer didn't expose the Indian agent graft to defend the Indians but rather to embarrass those who denied his promotions. He went straight to the press and didn't address his concerns to his command chain. His was never about solving the problem.
